The Police have arrested an 18-year-old man for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 19 April 2017, Police received a report that a car had been vandalised at a multi-storey carpark near Blk 507 Tampines Central 1. The car’s doors were scratched and two pieces of debtor’s notes were pasted on the vehicle. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him along Bedok South Road on 20 April 2017. One handphone and debtors’ records were seized as case exhibits.  Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have been involved in other similar loanshark harassment cases in Punggol, Sengkang, Bendemeer, Choa Chu Kang and Tampines.

The man will be charged in Court on 22 April 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
