The Police have arrested a 56-year-man for his suspected involvement in assisting illegal moneylenders in several cases of loanshark harassment.
On 4 July 2017, the Police received two separate reports of loanshark harassment at offices in the vicinity of Upper Cross Street and another in the vicinity of King George’s Avenue. Paint was splashed at the units and loanshark-related graffiti were found written on the walls. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMS), officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the suspect. Investigations further revealed that the suspect had travelled in a taxi to the incident locations. The 56-year-old taxi driver was subsequently traced. The taxi driver had knowingly assisted the suspect to carry out the loanshark harassment by driving him to the incident locations and was arrested on 4 July 2017.
Preliminary investigations revealed that both suspects are also believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in Ang Mo Kio, Yishun and Bishan estates. Investigations are ongoing to trace the other suspect involved in the case.
The 56-year-old taxi driver will be charged in Court on 6 July 2017 for abetment of the offence of Harassing Debtor on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender under Section 28(2)(a) read with Section 28A(3) and Section 28(3)(b)(i) of the Moneylenders Act, Chapter 188 (Rev Ed 2010). If convicted, first time offenders shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes
