The Police have arrested a 41-year-old man for his suspected involvement in multiple cases of cheating involving car rental scams.

Between May and July 2017, Police received multiple reports of car rental scams in which a man had rented luxurious cars but failed to make payments to the rental companies. Through extensive enquiries, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at the vicinity of Block 525 Bedok North Street 3 on 7 July 2017.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly deceived several car rental companies into believing that payments had been made through bank transfers for the rentals, thereby inducing the deliveries of the vehicles to him for his use.  When the car rental companies subsequently realised that no payments had been made, the suspect would abandon the cars.  He is believed to be involved in at least seven cases and the victims in these cases incurred combined losses of about $90,000.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 14 July 2017 with an offence of cheating, which is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.

Police would like to advise car rental companies to be prudent in verifying payment status before releasing vehicles to prospective customers.
