The Police have arrested two men and one woman, aged between 20 and 34, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in two separate cases.

 

In the first case, on 8 July 2017, the Police received a report informing that a residential unit at Lorong 7 Toa Payoh had been splashed with paint, the metal gate locked with a bicycle chain and a debtor’s note was placed at the unit’s door. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Tanglin Police Division and Jurong Police Division swiftly established the identities of the suspects.

 

On 13 July 2017, the 20-year-old man and 24-year-old woman were arrested along Compassvale Walk and Defu Lane respectively. The suspects are believed to be involved in several cases islandwide. Investigations against the woman are on-going.

 

In the second case, on 12 July 2017, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Blk 611 Clementi West Street 1 was locked by a bicycle lock, splashed with paint and loanshark’s graffiti found written on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and viewing of images from Police Cameras and other cameras in the area, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the 34-year-old suspect and arrested him at on 13 July 2016 near Sim Lim Tower. 

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out act of harassment in the area of Clementi and Changi housing estates.

 

The 20-year-old man in the first case and the 34-year-old man in the second case will be charged in Court on 15 July 2017 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
