The Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

In June 2017, Police received a report regarding a potential misuse of mobile phone protection program whereby several unusual replacement requests for lost phones were made. Through extensive enquiries, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him at Block 649 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 on 13 July 2017.

Preliminary investigations revealed that between September and December 2016, the man had allegedly recruited 12 persons to subscribe to the programme, which entitled members to replace a lost phone at a fee lower than the retail price. As a reward for the subscriptions, the man then bought for them new mobile phones of their choice. Subsequently, it is believed that the man had misused the particulars of these 12 persons to submit requests for phone replacement by falsely declaring that the original phones were lost. A total of 24 new mobile phones, with estimated market value of S$35,400, were fraudulently delivered to the culprit who later resold the phones.

Investigations against the man are ongoing.  Anyone found guilty of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
