The Police have arrested a man and woman, aged 48 and 25 respectively, for their suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.

In the first case, on 14 July 2017, the Police was informed that a residential unit in the vicinity of Telok Blangah was sprayed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti was found written on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMS), officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the 48-year-old suspect and arrested him on 25 July 2017 along Geylang Road.

In the second case, on 21 July 2017, the Police was informed that a unit at Sengkang Central was set on fire and loanshark graffiti was written on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and protracted investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division and Criminal Investigation Department arrested the 25-year-old woman on 24 July along Geylang Bahru. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be a debtor-turned-runner and had committed harassment on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender.

Both suspects will be charged in Court on 26 July 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
