The Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for a series of cheating cases.
In July 2017, the Police received several reports of online scams. The victims had responded to online advertisements, posted by the suspect, offering furniture and branded bags for sale. The suspect requested the victims to transfer money to a bank account. After receiving the payments, the suspect did not deliver the merchandise and became uncontactable.
Through extensive ground enquiries and follow-up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Blk 106 Bedok North Avenue 4 on 24 July 2017. He is also believed to be involved in other similar cases.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 26 July 2017 for the offence of Cheating which is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Members of the public are advised to adopt the following measures to avoid falling victim to online purchase scams:

Try to arrange for a physical meet-up with the seller to verify the authenticity of the merchandise prior to making payment. Bear in mind that the party that you are dealing with online is a stranger.

If advanced payments are required, use shopping platforms that provide arrangements to only release your payment to the seller upon your receipt of the item; and
