The Police have arrested three men, aged between 23 and 50, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
In the first case on 30 June 2017, the gate of a residential unit along Choa Chu Kang North 5 was chained by a bicycle lock and a debtor note was left at the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of a 50-year-old man and arrested him along Buangkok View on 31 July 2017. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment at Choa Chu Kang housing estates.
In the second case on 20 July 2017, the gate of a residential unit along Senja Road was chained by a bicycle lock and a debtor note was left at the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Jurong Police Division established the identities of two men, aged 23 and 46, and arrested them at the vicinity of Bukit Batok West Avenue and Town Hall Link respectively, on 31 Jul 2017. Preliminary investigations revealed that these two suspects are believed to have carried out similar acts of harassments at Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang, Jurong West, Tampines, Bishan and Hougang housing estates. One mobile phone, some clothings, five bicycle locks, a black bag, two caps and some debtor notes were seized as case exhibits.
The three suspects will be charged in Court on 2 August 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
