The Police have arrested a 48-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of armed robbery along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.
 
On 7 February 2019 at about 1.20 am, the Police received a report that a man, armed with a penknife, had robbed a 20-year-old woman of her mobile phone. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 on 8 February 2019 at about 4.30pm. 
 
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in a separate case of theft of a mobile phone at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 on 7 February 2019. 
 
The man will be charged in court on 9 February 2019 with armed robbery under Section 392 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of not less than 5 years and not more than 20 years, and shall also be punished with caning of not less than 12 strokes. 
 
The Police would like to remind members of the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
 
    • Always be alert and attentive to your surroundings. If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a more crowded area or call the Police to seek help;
    • Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large sums of cash;
    • When on the streets, carry your handbag on the side that is away from moving traffic;
    • When returning home alone or late at night, arrange for someone to escort you home; and
    • Carry a shrill alarm with you, and use it to scare off the culprit or to attract the attention of other members of the public.
