The Police have arrested a 67-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of attempted armed robbery.

On 12 July 2019 at about 1.50pm, Police received a report that an unknown man clad in a red top had entered a pawnshop at Blk 213 Bedok North Street 1 and tried to smash the glass display case with a chopper. The suspect fled the scene with the chopper but did not make off with anything. No one was injured.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him within 32 hours, on 13 July 2019 along Yishun Street 22.

The man will be charged in court on 15 July 2019 for attempted armed robbery under Section 393 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted of this offence, he will be liable to imprisonment between 2 and 7 years, and caning with not less than 12 strokes.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police, Julius Lim, Commander of Bedok Police Division, said, “The man had taken great pains to conceal his identity by covering his face with a surgical mask and changed his clothing multiple times after fleeing the scene. Despite that, Bedok Police Division officers demonstrated great resolve and resourcefulness, and managed to bring him to justice. This arrest also signals how Police will spare no effort to track down those who conceal their identities to commit crime.”
