Clementi Police Division held their “Scam Awareness Roadshow” at Clementi Central on 7 December 2019. The roadshow aimed to increase public awareness on scams through the crime prevention booths and outreach engagement by Youth Community Outreach Patrol (COP) members from Kent Ridge Secondary School and Tanglin Secondary School.
At the event, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC), Clementi Branch, was commended with the Community Partnership Award for their effort and vigilance in detecting and preventing scams.
On 12 November 2019, the OCBC Fraud Surveillance Unit detected an unusual transaction by a customer who requested to transfer $81,500 into a suspicious bank account.
This information was relayed to the OCBC, Clementi Branch, and the Customer Service Manager, Ms Christine Lai contacted the customer immediately to verify the transaction. Through their conversation, Ms Lai suspected that the customer could be a victim of scam and advised him not to proceed with the transaction. The swift action by Ms Lai and the OCBC team prevented the customer from losing $81,500.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Jarrod Pereira, Commander of Clementi Police Division, said, “Our community partners have a significant part to play in tackling crime. The efforts of Ms Christine Lai and the OCBC team is an example of the successful joint effort in fighting scams. The Police value this strong partnership with the community to keep Singapore safe and secure.”
