The Police have arrested two Singaporean men, aged 29 and 32, for their suspected
On 13 Jun 2020, the Police received a report from a victim who was purportedly cheated by an online seller who claimed to be selling authentic gold bars at a discounted price on Carousell. On 13 June 2020 the victim had met the 29-year-old man to collect four pieces of gold bars in exchange for $5,440. The victim subsequently went to a pawnshop to check if the gold bars are authentic, however, he was told that the gold bars were likely to be fake.
Through investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of two men and arrested them on 16 June 2020. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 32-year-old man had moved the criminal proceeds. Both men are believed to be involved in several other online scams. The 29-year-old man will be charged in court on 18 Jun 2020 for cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which is punishable with an imprisonment term that may extend to 10 years, and a fine.
Investigations against the 32-year-old man are ongoing.
The Police would like to remind members of the public to be cautious and not to buy gold bars from unreliable sources.
