The Police are investigating 15 men, aged between 50 to 70, for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities.

Two enforcement operations were conducted by Ang Mo Kio Police Division on 7 July 2021 and 18 Jul 2021, at Rivervale Crescent and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 respectively. During the two operations, cash amounting to more than $2000, five mobile phones, and betting paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits.

Preliminary investigations revealed that eight men, aged 63 to 68, and seven men, aged 50 to 70, were allegedly involved in illegal horse betting activities in public locations along Rivervale Crescent and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 respectively. Investigations against all the men are on-going.

Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, the offence of placing bets with a bookmaker carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both. The offence of being involved in bookmaking under Section 5(3)(a) of the Betting Act carries a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and a jail term of up to five years.

The Police take a serious view against all forms of illegal betting activities. The Police will continue to take tough enforcement actions and prosecute those involved in accordance with the law. Members of the public are advised to steer clear of all forms of illegal gambling activities.
