A 35-year-old man was arrested on 31 October 2022 for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, using abusive language against a public servant, and suspected drink driving.
On 31 October 2022 at about 2.35am, the Police were alerted to a traffic accident involving a car which had collided into a road divider along Middle Road. When police officers arrived at the scene and engaged the car driver, he allegedly hurled vulgarities and hit one of the officers on the head.
The driver was subsequently arrested for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, using abusive language against a public servant, and suspected drink driving. The 31-year-old officer was conveyed conscious to the hospital and received outpatient treatment. Police investigations are ongoing.
The offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, under Section 332 of the Penal Code 1871, carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, and a fine or caning. The offence of using abusive language against a public servant under Section 6(3) Protection from Harassment Act 2014 carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
The offence of driving while under influence of drink under Section 67(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000, or an imprisonment term not exceeding 12 months, or both and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $20,000 and an imprisonment term not exceeding two years. Offenders may also face disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is an extremely dangerous and irresponsible act that can cause a serious or fatal traffic accident. All motorists are reminded to abide with traffic rules to keep the roads safe for everyone. The Police have zero tolerance towards such acts of violence against Police officers or public servants who are carrying out their duties and will not hesitate to take firm action against those who endanger the safety of our officers or other road users.
