On 5 November 2022, the Traffic Police (TP) and Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC), with support from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), launched the Singapore Ride Safe (SRS) 2022 Campaign to promote safe riding behaviours among motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists continue to be over-represented in road traffic accidents that resulted in death and injuries. Between January to September 2022, motorcyclists and pillion riders were involved in 56.1% of all traffic accidents. They made up 46.8% of all traffic fatalities.

TP continuously educates and engages motorcyclists. In the first half of 2022, TP reached out to more than 15 motorcycle shops, associations and companies who hire large groups of motorcyclists to spread road safety messages to about 550 members and staff.

The SRS 2022 Campaign is part of TP’s ongoing efforts to engage the motorcyclist community and it comprised two segments:

  1. 19 September 2022 to 24 October 2022 – “Reward the Riders” (RTR) 2022; and
  2. 5 November 2022 - SRS 2022 at the National Bikers’ Weekend (NBW), D’Marquee Downtown East

Reward the Riders (RTR) 2022

Unlike the usual traffic enforcement blitz where TP patrol officers detect potential traffic violators, motorcyclists who were spotted by TP patrol officers during RTR 2022 wearing appropriate safety gear and/or displaying safe riding habits on the roads, were rewarded with goodie bags (refer to Annex A) and featured on the “Use Your Roadsense” Facebook page.

Past RTR campaigns were well received by the motorcycling community and members of the public. Since its launch in 2019, TP had commended more than 600 individuals and 42 riders were commended by TP this year. Amongst them, five exemplary riders who wore proper riding gear and adhered to the traffic rules on the roads were given a special award during SRS 2022. For details of their exemplary riding acts, please refer to Annex B.

Singapore Ride Safe 2022

SRS 2022 was held in conjunction with NBW 2022 at D’Marquee on 5 November 2022. The guest-of-honour was Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of Social and Family Development, Ms Sun Xueling. About 150 guests from the local motorcycle interest groups, partners and stakeholders attended the event.

To highlight the importance of wearing proper protective gears while riding, demonstrations on how wearing protective riding gear can be both fashionable and functionable were shown through a fashion show. Mr Kamsani, a driving school instructor from ComfortDelgro Driving Centre, also delivered a defensive riding talk to give helpful tips on riding safely in challenging traffic situations to reduce the risk of traffic accidents. To reinforce the road safety messages, an exhibition booth will be set up at NBW 2022 from 4 to 6 November 2022.

MOS Sun Xueling said, “I want to highlight these five exemplary riders: Afif Musairi Bin Musabah, Teymoor Nabili, Daryl Chen Zhongwei, Tobias Chan Si Chow and Louis Tan Qing Zhou. The patrol officers had observed that these riders were practicing all the traits of safe, responsible and gracious road users. They were adhering to traffic rules, giving way to other road users, and donned appropriate riding apparels. I want to thank them for setting a good example for all of us. Whether we are drivers, riders, or pedestrians, everyone should be a gracious and safe road user.”

Commander of Traffic Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Gerald Lim said “TP would like to emphasise to all motorcyclists on the importance of donning protective gear and riding safely on the roads. All road users should exercise graciousness to keep the roads safe for everyone.”

Chairman of SRSC, Mr Bernard Tay said “SRSC hopes that through the Singapore Ride Safe Campaign, we are able to encourage motorcyclists to practise safe riding habits on the roads, including defensive riding where required. Motorcyclists should always stay alert, vigilant and observe safe riding etiquette.”

TP and SRSC hope that the SRS 2022 Campaign will promote safer riding habits among motorcyclists.
