The Police have observed a phishing scam variant involving TikTok. Since 2 July 2023, at least six victims have fallen prey, with total losses amounting to at least $8,000.

In this variant, victims would come across fake advertisements on TikTok, offering deals on items such as toilet paper rolls. After clicking on the URL link embedded in the fake advertisements, the victims would be directed to a phishing site, where they would be required to key in their credit card details and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to make the purchase. The victims would only realise that they have been scammed when they discovered unauthorised transactions made from their credit cards.

The Police would like to advise members of the public to adopt the following precautionary measures:

  1. ADD - Scamshield App and security features (e.g., enable two-factor (2FA) or multifactor authentication for banks).

  2. CHECK - for scam signs with official sources (e.g., visit www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Helpline at 1800-722-6688) and be wary of URL links provided in unsolicited advertisements, especially those related to deals that are too good to be true. Double check if the amount charged to your credit card is correct and on the purpose of the transaction. Do not provide your OTP if the amount charged to your card is incorrect and/or if the purpose of the transaction is not related to the purchase (e.g., adding your credit card to Apple Pay to pay using mobile wallet).

  3. TELL - authorities, family, and friends about this scam so they do not fall for it. Report any fraudulent transactions to your bank immediately and report the fraudulent advertisements to TikTok.

If you have any information relating to such crimes or if you are in doubt, please call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000, or submit it online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness. All information will be kept strictly confidential. If you require urgent Police assistance, please dial ‘999’.
