A 21-year-old man will be charged in court on 25 March 2024 for his suspected involvement in a hit-and-run case which resulted in two casualties suffering grievous hurt.
On 23 March 2024 at about 11.40pm, the Police were alerted to an accident involving a car and two pedestrians along Sims Avenue towards Sims Avenue East. A 51-year-old male pedestrian and a 32-year-old female pedestrian were conveyed conscious to the hospital and are currently warded for treatment. The driver did not stop to render assistance to the injured and allegedly fled the scene after the accident.
Through ground inquiries and with the aid of video footage from a witness and Police cameras, officers from Traffic Police established the identity of the driver and arrested him on 24 March 2024.
The man will be charged in court on 25 March 2024 for the following offences:
- Driving without due care causing grievous hurt under Section 65(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Driving a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960;
- Taking of a motor vehicle without owner’s consent under Section 96(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Failing to stop after an accident under Section 84(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Failing to render assistance to the injured under Section 84(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961; and
- Moving the vehicle without a police officer’s authority under Section 84(4) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
The offence of driving without due care causing grievous hurt carries a fine of up to $5,000, an imprisonment term of up to two years, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, carries a fine of up to $10,000, an imprisonment term of up to four years, or both; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles for at least 5 years.
The offence of driving without a valid driving licence carries a fine of up to $10,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three years, or both. In the case of a repeat offender, carries a fine of up to $20,000, or an imprisonment term of up to six years, or both.
The offence of using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage, taking of a motor vehicle without owner’s consent and moving the vehicle without a police officer’s authority, carries a fine of up to $1,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three months, or both, for each of the offences.
The offence of failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance to the injured, carries a fine of up to a fine of up $1,000 or imprisonment for a term of up 3 months or both. In the case of a second or subsequent offence, carries a fine of up $2,000 or an imprisonment term of up to 6 months, or both, for each of the offences.
All motorists are urged to abide by traffic rules to keep our roads safe for everyone. Motorists who are involved in accidents should stop and render assistance, such as calling for an ambulance to provide medical attention to the injured. It is an offence to leave an accident scene without rendering assistance. Traffic Police will spare no efforts to bring motorists who commit serious traffic offences and endanger the safety of other road users to justice.
