The Police have arrested a 27-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in a case of extortion.

On 5 March 2023 at about 7.45pm, the Police received a report on a case of extortion from a male victim who had procured escort services from an unknown woman. The woman then purportedly told the man that she would report him to the Police if he failed to give her $15,000. Out of fear, the victim transferred a sum of $1,800 via bank transfer first.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested her within 19 hours of the report. The woman is believed to be involved in three other similar cases reported, which involved a total sum of at least $19,000.

The woman will be charged in court on 8 March 2023 with extortion under Section 384 of the Penal Code 1871. Anyone convicted is liable for a jail term of not less than two years and not more than seven years and with caning.
