Advisory On Phone Scams By Persons Impersonating As Government Agency Officers

Between January and September this year, the Police have received 37 reports from members of the public on persons impersonating Government officials. These impersonators contacted them and claimed to be officials from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, the Singapore Police Force or the Courts. They asked for money transfers or credit card details for the purposes of settling outstanding offences. The total amount cheated so far this year is about S$81,000.

The Police would like to advise the public that Government agencies do not call members of the public to request for any money transfers or credit card details. Members of the public should exercise vigilance and be wary of such phone calls.

If you receive such calls, you should take the following steps:

  1. Ignore such calls;
  2. Do not transfer any money to the caller, either via remittance agencies, banks or any other means; and
  3. Report the case to the Police.

If you have any information related to this crime, please call the Police hotline at 1800-255 0000 or 999 for urgent Police assistance. Information can also be submitted online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness. All information will be kept strictly confidential.
