The Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for his suspected involvement in an internet love scam involving more than $70,000.
On 26 May 2019 at about 10.00am, the Police received a report from a 38-year-old male victim informing that he had been cheated by two men whom he had befriended on a dating site. The victim informed that he was introduced to the second suspect by the first suspect. The victim reported that he was cheated into transferring money to both men who had requested for his assistance, citing various reasons including the need to pay school fees and living expenses. However, both men subsequently became uncontactable.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Woodlands Police Division established that a 32-year-old man is believed to have used different monikers on the dating site to cheat the victim. He was arrested on the same day.
The man will be charged in court on 28 May 2019 with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he can be jailed up to 10 years and fined.
