The Police have arrested a 50-year-old Chinese man for his involvement in causing a fire. 

On 25 September 2026 at about 9pm, the Police were alerted to a case of fire outside a mosque located at 80 Raffles Place. Preliminary investigations revealed that a man had placed an oil tin at the entrance of the mosque and set fire to a piece of undergarment placed in the oil tin. He subsequently left the location. The fire was put out by a member of public and no injuries were reported.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of Police cameras, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him within three hours of the report. A lighter was seized as case exhibit.

The man will be charged in court on 26 September 2026 for causing or contributing to risk of dangerous fire, punishable under Section 285 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to one year, or fine, or both.

The Police have zero tolerance against acts that endanger the lives or safety of others and will not hesitate to act against those who blatantly disregard the law.
