Voyeurism is the act of observing or filming another person who is engaged in a private act without his or her permission. Voyeurism is an opportunistic crime that can take place anywhere, anytime.
The majority of voyeurism cases involve:
- Perpetrators taking upskirt photographs or videos.
- “Peeping Tom” cases where perpetrators intentionally observe or record another person engaging in a private act without his or her consent (e.g. over or under a toilet cubicle).
Crime Prevention Tips
- Be alert and attentive to your surroundings, especially when you are in a crowded or confined space.
- Be wary of suspicious persons or behaviour and of those who might be making others uncomfortable.
- If someone moves uncomfortably close to you (e.g. deliberately stands or sits close to you on a bus or MRT), move away if possible.
- Be observant of recording devices.
- Consider investing in a shrill alarm for you and your loved ones as it can come in handy to sound for help during an emergency.
