Our volunteers in the Singapore Police Force (SPF) embody this expression, finding fulfilment in their volunteering work outside of their hectic schedules.
From students to working professionals, the SPF’s Episodic Volunteering Programme (EVP) brings together volunteers from all walks of life.
Launched by the SPF on 8 March 2025, the EVP provides flexible and ad-hoc volunteering opportunities, allowing EVP volunteers to contribute their experience, skills and expertise amidst their busy schedules.
Join Police Life as we meet EVP volunteers Naufal Aiman bin Jasni, Shivani Kapoor and Elok Robert Tee (“Robert”), who show that volunteering with the SPF doesn't have to be a big commitment. With flexible and ad-hoc roles under the EVP, there is something for everyone to step up and contribute - no matter how busy life gets.
A Purposeful Step
Naufal, 22, a student at the National Institute of Education in Nanyang Technological University, is currently pursuing a degree in Malay Studies and Education.
Despite his hectic undergraduate schedule, Naufal wanted to continue his journey with the SPF after completing his National Service in February 2025. This was when he came across the EVP.
“I wanted to meet new people, build up my networks and continue contributing to society,” he explained.
As a Roadshow Ambassador with the SPF, Naufal enjoyed talking to residents about scams and shared crime prevention tips with them. “The communication skills I’ve learnt as a volunteer will eventually value-add to my soft skills as a teacher too!” he said.
Volunteering at ‘SaferSG, Together’ booths at the Police Community roadshows alongside people from different generations and backgrounds has been a fulfilling experience for Naufal. Though relatively new to community engagement, he has already learned to appreciate the importance of keeping interactions genuine in order to better connect with residents.
“Even though we’re all on different paths, as volunteers, we share a common purpose of having the heart to serve the community,” he said.
Volunteering with a Heart
Juggling a full-time job on weekdays together with volunteering duties can be challenging.
For Shivani Kapoor, 45, volunteering with the SPF has given her the opportunity to contribute to something larger than herself. To her, it’s a small yet meaningful way to keep Singapore safe and secure.
“I tend to spare at least half a day on weekends to actively volunteer,” she laughed.
Shivani is currently a Product Lead at a telecommunications company and, as an EVP Roadshow Ambassador, she helped to raise awareness about crime prevention initiatives, particularly how residents can protect themselves from scams as well as identify and report suspicious activities.
Before every event they take on as a volunteer, the EVP volunteers were briefed on their respective roles, responsibilities and key messages to communicate. “It’s rewarding to know that even a simple conversation or outreach activity can help someone stay safe,” she said.
Shivani especially enjoyed the smiles and enthusiasm of the young ones at roadshows. “This reminded me that community engagement starts at a young age, and fostering trust and awareness early on can have a lasting impact,” she explained.
A Long-lived Passion
There’s an old saying that “age brings wisdom,” which describes 61-year-old EVP volunteer Elok Robert Tee (“Robert”) perfectly.
Currently an officer with the Skills & Workforce Development Agency, he expanded his volunteering journey by joining the EVP in 2023 during its pilot phase, after years of serving in other SPF volunteer schemes.
The Volunteer SG portal is where the SPF publishes its volunteering opportunities, and Robert made it a habit to check weekly for new volunteer roles. With a variety of roles available under the EVP - from trainers, content designers to consultant roles - he appreciates the flexibility to select opportunities that best match his schedule and interests.
Robert has taken on multiple roles under the EVP. As a Roadshow Ambassador, he engaged members of the public at police community events. His professional expertise as a certified adult trainer has enabled him to also step up as a Group Discussion Facilitator, supporting training activities at the Home Team Academy. For Robert, the EVP is not just about giving back - it is also an avenue to put his skills to meaningful use.
For Robert, the commitment to keeping Singapore safe extends beyond his own volunteering - his spouse also serves with the Volunteer Special Constabulary (Community) scheme at Clementi Police Division. “What I’ve learned as a volunteer is that we all share the same concerns when it comes to safety and security for our families,” said Robert.
Everyone can Play a Part
Though their backgrounds, age and experiences are vastly different, our EVP volunteers work together as one. As a fresh volunteer with the SPF, Naufal encourages young people not to be afraid of trying something new: “You’re still young, so just go for it. Even if it's just once, you’d have gained valuable experience!”
“You don’t need to make a huge commitment to make a meaningful difference. Small actions, when multiplied across the community, help build a safer and more resilient Singapore,” Shivani said.
“Start now and continue volunteering in whatever way you can to serve the community,” affirmed Robert.
Together, we can all play a part in keeping Singapore safe and secure.
