Penalties for Traffic Offences

Content Overview

Under the Driver Improvement Points System, demerit points may be meted out to valid Singapore Driving Licence holders when they commit certain traffic offences. They may also be offered composition fines.

Notwithstanding the above, anyone who commits a traffic offence is still liable to face the full punishment(s) that the offence carries. They may be prosecuted in court and face punishments which may include fines, imprisonment, and/or disqualification of the driving licence, depending on the severity of the offence(s).

The Courts can also take into consideration past compounded traffic offences when deciding on an appropriate sentence for errant road users.

*Motorists who commit specified offences at pedestrian crossings or offences that endanger pedestrian safety at School Zones, Silver Zones or Friendly Zones Streets will incur two additional demerit points on top of the original demerit points for the offence. In addition, the composition fines for these offences committed within abovementioned Zones/ Streets will be raised by $100, subject to the total fine not exceeding $500

Criminal Penalties for Irresponsible Driving Offences

Motorists who commit or exhibit irresponsible driving behaviours that endangers the lives of road users will be prosecuted in Court and face harsher penalties. This is to safeguard other road users and to ensure these offenders stay off the roads longer.
