Meet Station Inspector (SI) Shaoxiong, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) pilot in the Aerial Response Team (ART).
As a UAV pilot in the ART, SI Shaoxiong and his fellow UAV pilots harness their UAV-piloting skills to assist and support in Police operations. Armed with their trusty UAVs that are equipped with thermal imaging capabilities, SI Shaoxiong and his colleagues pilot their UAVs to fly high above to provide ground commanders with an aerial situational picture, enhancing the Police’s sense-making capabilities and response on the ground.
Police operations that SI Shaoxiong and his colleagues are deployed to can vary from major security events such as the New Year Countdown celebrations at Marina Bay to enforcement operations, and even search and rescue operations.
As a UAV pilot, staying attentive to ground challenges is crucial. Quick thinking and being decisive are also essential traits when navigating through unforeseen circumstances. UAV pilots undergo continuous and rigorous training regularly to ensure that they are well prepared for various scenarios they may encounter during operations.
“As a UAV pilot in the ART, my role is to support ground operations by providing real-time insights from high above. Every flight provides useful information to our officers on the ground to make better decisions and to respond swiftly and decisively. I am glad to be able to play a meaningful role in helping to ensure mission success in every operation we carry out,” says SI Shaoxiong.
