Four Men To Be Charged For Public Nuisance And Using Abusive Language Against Police Officers

Four men, aged between 32 and 44, will be charged in Court on 25 September 2024 for allegedly causing public nuisance and using abusive language against Police officers.

On 22 September 2024 at about 5.10am, Police officers were preserving a murder crime scene along Sam Leong Road, when the four men approached the cordoned-off area and attempted to cross it. They were advised to proceed via an alternative route. Three of the men then allegedly taunted and used abusive language against the officers, while the fourth man purportedly filmed the interactions with his mobile phone. Despite the four men’s behaviour, the officers exercised restraint and strived to de-escalate the situation, even as they were trying to manage the ongoing murder investigation. The four men left via the alternative route only after much persuasion.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Central Police Division established the identities of the four men, and they were arrested on 23 September 2024.

The offence of using abusive language against a public servant under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act 2014 carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. The offence of causing public nuisance under Section 290(b) of the Penal Code 1871 carries an imprisonment term of up to 3 months, a fine of up to $2,000, or both.

The Police take a serious view of persons who obstruct public servants from carrying out their duties, and do not tolerate any form of abusive behaviour towards our officers carrying out their duties. We will not hesitate to take action against those who do.
