The Police have arrested a 38-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
On 25 December 2024 at about 9.50 pm, the Police responded swiftly to a case of suspicious person believed to be a runner of unlicensed money lender outside a residential unit along Rivervale Drive. A 38-year-old man, who was found in possession of a black marker pen and two cans of red paint, was arrested at scene.
On 26 December 2024 at about 12.20 am, the Police responded swiftly to another case of suspicious person believed to be a runner of unlicensed money lender outside the same residential unit along Rivervale Drive. A 31-year-old woman, who was found in possession of a black marker pen and two cans of red paint, was arrested at scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo was not known to each other and had responded separately to job advertisements on Facebook for the promise of fast cash, which they did not receive.
The man and woman will be charged in court on 27 December 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. The Public can call ‘999’ if they suspect or know anyone of loansharking activities.
