Media Reply On Investigations Into Staged Memorial Held At NUS

In response to media queries, the Police confirm that a Police report had been lodged on a public assembly that took place without a valid permit on 13 January 2025, in front of a building within the National University of Singapore. As a result of the Police report, police investigations are ongoing.

A public statement was uploaded on social media on 13 January 2025 stating that a memorial event was held in support of the Palestinian cause and calling for universities in Singapore to reconsider ties with Israeli institutions.

The Police take no issue with such calls. People are free to make such (or other) calls, as long as it is not against the law. But if persons want to have a public assembly, then they have to get a Police permit, under the Public Order Act 2009. No Police permit was obtained for this event. The Police are investigating into the potential offences under Section 16 of the Public Order Act 2009. Under the Criminal Procedure Code 2010, the Police have powers of investigation, including to conduct searches for, and access, inspect and check any devices used in connection with an offence.

On 27 February 2025, the Police visited the residences of six individuals aged between 21 and 28, to conduct investigations related to their alleged involvement in the incident.

  • Three of the individuals were present at their residence during the Police visit and preferred for their statement to be recorded at their residences.
  • One individual was present at his residence during the Police visit but requested to be interviewed the following day. Police acceded to the request and interviewed him at Clementi Police Division on 28 February 2025.
  • The remaining two individuals were unavailable for interviews at the time of the Police visit and a written notice was issued to inform them to attend an in-person interview at Clementi Police Division on 28 February 2025, to assist in investigations into their alleged involvement in the same public assembly.

Communication devices believed to contain evidence relating to the offence, and clothing believed to be used in the incident were seized for the purposes of investigation. This is done in many investigations, because such devices often contain relevant evidence.
