Six motorists, aged between 21 and 35, will be charged in court on 11 March 2026 for dangerous driving. Two of the motorists will also be charged with dangerous driving causing hurt.
On 27 October 2024 at about 1.30am, the Police were alerted to a traffic accident along Stamford Road towards Fort Canning Link, when a car had overturned. Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Traffic Police established that this was part of a larger incident involving six vehicles driving dangerously together.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the six cars had been speeding along Central Expressway (CTE) towards Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), reaching speeds of up to 176 km/h - nearly double the 90km/h speed limit. After exiting CTE, the vehicles continued their dangerous driving behaviour towards Orchard Road, which led to two separate accidents.
The details of the accidents on 27 October 2024 are as follows:
- First accident: A 21-year-old male driver lost control of his vehicle while travelling along Stamford Road. He swerved sharply to the right, mounted the kerb and crashed into a traffic light pole and directional signage before overturning onto the grass verge. The driver and his 21-year-old male passenger sustained injuries and were conveyed to the hospital.
- Second accident: Due to the first accident, a 33-year-old male driver from the same group slowed down suddenly, causing a 27-year-old male driver behind him to collide into the rear of his car. Both drivers sustained injuries but refused conveyance to the hospital.
Through extensive follow-up investigations, officers from the Traffic Police established the identities of all six drivers and arrested them. All drivers were immediately suspended from driving and their vehicles were seized as case exhibits.
The offence of dangerous driving under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine up to $5,000, a jail term up to 12 months, or both. When hurt is caused, penalties increase significantly - the offence carries a fine up to $10,000, a jail term up to two years, or both. Offenders may also face disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
The Traffic Police takes a serious view of motorists who engage in speeding and dangerous driving behaviour that endangers the safety of other road users. Such reckless acts not only put the drivers themselves at risk but also threaten the lives of innocent road users. The Police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who flout traffic laws and endanger public safety.
