The Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) Community vocation creates more opportunities for the public to join the VSC and to allow those who are unable to meet the training and patrol requirements of the armed VSC to volunteer with the SPF.
What Does a VSC Community Officer Do?
As a VSC Community officer, you will be posted to one of the seven Police Land Divisions, including Airport Police Division, Police Operations Command Centre and Public Transport Security Command, and will be required to serve a minimum of eight hours of duty per month. The position is voluntary but you will receive duty allowance of S$5.20 per hour.
As part of your duties, you will:
- Patrol areas with high commuter traffic
- Facilitate crowd control and traffic management
- Carry out engagement at events and roadshows
- Assist with evacuations during an incident
You will be equipped with handcuffs, a baton and a communications set to aid in responding to incidents you come across while on patrol.
Who Can Be a VSC Community Officer?
You must be a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident between 18-60 years of age and have attained a minimum of 3 GCE 'N' levels credits or NITEC. Males must have fulfilled their National Service obligations. You must also undergo nine weeks of non-residential training on:
- Basic legal knowledge
- Policing reporting procedures
- Police contact tactics (PCT)
- First aid
Unlike regular Police officers or VSC officers, as a VSC Community officer, you are not required to take IPPT. You will, however, have to undergo health screening to ensure suitability for your assigned roles.
The training is conducted approximately three times a week; twice on weekday evenings and occasional Saturdays.

1. Are VSC officers covered by insurance?
Yes, all VSC officers are covered under a group corporate insurance plan as well as workmen’s compensation for injuries sustained during duties.
2. Can I re-apply after my unsuccessful application?
You must satisfy the minimum requirements before a re-application will be considered. The VSC Recruitment Department may invite applicants to re-apply on a case by case basis.
3. Can I apply for Regular Officer posts based on my VSC application?
No, a fresh application must be made for a Regular Officer position. Some of the minimum requirements for a Regular Officer position differ from that of a VSC. There will be no exemption from the Regular Officer’s basic training course even if you have completed the VSC basic training.
4. Will I be considered if I’m pending or still serving National Service?
Those who are serving Full-time National Service or are waiting to be enlisted will not be considered.
5. What if I am unable to attend the full training, is it possible to extend my training duration?
You are able to defer training if you are unable to commit due to your current schedule and responsibilities. To defer training, apply for leave in writing, indicating the reason to the Basic Training Officers (VSC) at Training Command.
6 Will I be exempted from National Service if I join as an SPF volunteer?
No, you are not exempted from National Service.
7. How are the VSC (Community) officers equipped?
VSC(Community) officers are equipped with handcuffs, a baton and a communications set, to aid them in their initial response when they come across any incidents during their patrol.
8. Do VSC (Community) officers have a rank?
VSC (Community) are appointed as Special Constable (V) under the Police Force Act. This rank is retained throughout their service in the vocation.
