The Police have arrested a 22-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in a cheating case.

On 4 February 2021, the Police received a report on an internet love scam. A 21-year-old female victim had befriended the scammer on a social media platform and developed relationship with the woman, whom the victim thought was male. The scammer then allegedly cheated the victim by having the victim purchased gifts and gaming credits for her.

Through investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on 6 April 2021.

Police investigations against the woman are ongoing. The offence of cheating, punishable under Section 420 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years, and a fine.

Members of the public are advised to be careful when befriending strangers online. They should also be wary when they are asked to send money or gifts to people they do not know well, or to people they have not met in person before, as such requests could be a scam.
