A 35-year-old man will be charged in court on 16 March 2024 for his involvement in a hit-and-run case which resulted in one fatality.

On 25 August 2023 at 9.25am, the Police were alerted to an accident involving a lorry and a pedestrian at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 and Bulim Avenue. A 57-year-old male pedestrian was conveyed conscious to the hospital, where he subsequently passed away. The driver did not stop to render assistance to the injured and fled to Malaysia immediately after the accident. He did not report the accident to the Police within 24 hours.

Through extensive ground inquiries and with the aid of video footage from a witness and Land Transport Authority, officers from Traffic Police and Immigration & Checkpoints Authority established the vehicle registration number of the car and the identity of the involved driver on the same day.

With strong co-operation and assistance rendered by the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), the driver was arrested in Malaysia on 14 March 2024, pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the State Courts in Singapore. The driver was then handed over to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on 15 March 2024.

The man will be charged in court with the offence of Dangerous driving causing death under Section 64(2)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961. The offence of dangerous driving causing death carries an imprisonment term of not less than two years and not more than eight years; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

Commander of Traffic Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Daniel Tan, expressed his appreciation to the RMP for their assistance in the arrest and said, “The arrest is a testament to the excellent relationship forged between the SPF and the RMP. We are appreciative of their assistance and will spare no efforts to bring motorists who commit serious traffic offences and endanger the safety of other road users in Singapore and flee our borders to justice.”
