Four Members Of The Public Presented With Public Spiritedness Award For Saving A Life

On 23 May 2024, Bedok Police Division presented the Public Spiritedness Award to four members of the public for preventing a man from falling off the ledge of a residential block in Tampines.

On 20 May 2024, Ms Siah Jia Lin (“Ms Siah”) was walking along the common corridor of a residential block in Tampines when she noticed a 46-year-old man hanging onto the ledge on the outside of the block. He was using a small platform to support himself. Upon seeing this, she immediately ran back to her family’s residential unit and sought help from her family members.

Her father, grandmother, and their migrant domestic worker immediately responded. Mr Siah Ee Fong (“Mr Siah”), Ms Ho Soo Pong (“Ms Ho”) and Ms Aye Nandar Aung (“Ms Nandar”) swifty rushed over to the man and held onto him until officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at scene and took over. The man was eventually brought to safety by SPF and SCDF officers.

Ms Siah and her family’s quick actions saved the man’s life. The man was subsequently apprehended under section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2008. No injuries were reported.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Justin Wong, Commander of Bedok Police Division commended the award recipients for their public spiritedness. He said “The quick actions by the Siah family and their migrant domestic worker that night saved a life. I hope the courageous acts of this selfless family will inspire others to step forward, when they see their fellow man in need.”
