Prime Minister (PM) and Minister for Finance Mr Lawrence Wong visited the co-located Punggol Neighbourhood Police Centre and Punggol Fire Station on 4 April 2025 for an engagement session with Home Team National Servicemen (NSmen). This marked PM Wong’s first official visit to the frontline units of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
PM Wong was accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, Mr K Shanmugam, Acting Commissioner for the SPF, Mr How Kwang Hwee and Commissioner for the SCDF, Mr Eric Yap.
During the visit, PM Wong was briefed on some of the latest training and operational capabilities of SPF and SCDF, including SPF’s Counter-Drone Capability and Next-generation Fast Response Car, and SCDF’s Smart Classroom with Virtual Reality (VR) and Extended Reality (XR) training systems, High-Performance Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and the Electric Pump Ladder (photos in Annex B and Annex C).
NSmen play an integral role in Singapore's Home Team, serving as a vital force in safeguarding our nation's safety and security. This year, the SPF will be celebrating 50 years of National Service, which commenced on 24 July 1975, providing a crucial supplement to the regular police force. Currently, there are over 43,000 operationally-ready NSmen in the Home Team and more than 7,000 serving full-time with the SPF and SCDF. As challenges evolve over the past decades, the SPF and SCDF continues to enhance training and operational readiness to ensure our NSmen remain a key pillar of our nation's safety and security.
