A total of two men and 14 women, aged between 21 and 56, were arrested for various offences, and 26 men and two women aged between 23 and 67, are facing enforcement actions for various offences, following a series of multi-agency enforcement operations conducted between 17 and 23 March 2025.
The operations were led by Bedok Police Division and supported by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Singapore Customs (Customs), Land Transport Authority (LTA), and Singapore Food Agency (SFA). These operations aimed to clamp down on illegal activities in Geylang, including illegal gambling, vice activities, illegal sales of health products, drug-related activities and illegal hawking.
The details of some of the illegal activities uncovered are as follows:
- On 17 March 2025, officers from Bedok Police Division and ICA conducted an enforcement operation against illegal gambling activities at an industrial building located along Kallang Pudding Road. During the operation, cash amounting to $3,500 and gambling-related paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits. Two men and one woman, aged between 26 and 56, were arrested for offences under the Gambling Control Act 2022. Another one man and two women, aged between 65 and 67, are being investigated for offences under the Gambling Control Act 2022. Under Section 20(2) of the Gambling Control Act 2022, any individual who gambles with another person in or from any place or premises in Singapore and knows, or ought reasonably to have known, that the place or premises is an unlawful gambling place shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on conviction to a fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment of up to six months or both.
- On 18 March 2025, officers from the Singapore Customs conducted an enforcement operation against duty-unpaid cigarettes in Geylang. 11 men, aged between 29 and 55, were issued with composition sums under the Customs Act 1960 for possessing duty-unpaid cigarettes. 63 sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized as part of the operation. Buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, possessing, or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act 1960 and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act 1993. Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to six years.
- Between 18 and 20 March 2025, officers from Bedok Police Division, HSA, ICA and CNB conducted joint enforcement operations along Geylang Lorongs, targeting illegal drug activities and the sales of illegal health products. Cough syrups and various sexual enhancement products with an estimated total street value of about $5,200 and eight e-vapourisers were seized. Six men, aged between 21 and 38, are being investigated for offences under the Health Products Act 2007. Three among the six men were also issued composition fines for the possession or use of e-vaporisers. Additionally, another four men, aged between 33 and 35, were issued composition fines for the possession or use of e-vaporisers. Those found guilty of importing, manufacturing and/or supplying illegal health products, may be liable to an imprisonment term for up to two years and/or fined up to $50,000. Any person who is convicted of possession, use and purchase of e-vaporisers is liable to a fine not exceeding $2,000.
- Between 20 and 22 March 2025, officers from Bedok Police Division, ICA and CNB conducted a series of checks at public entertainment outlets and hotels. One public entertainment outlet along Geylang Road was found to have breached the licensing conditions of the Public Entertainments Act 1958. One male licensee, aged 52, was issued with a composition fine. Additionally, eight women, aged between 21 and 46, were arrested for working without a valid work pass under Section 5(2) of the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act 1990, and one woman aged 43 was arrested for an offence under the Immigration Act 1959. Four women, aged between 22 and 27, were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter 1961.
- On 21 March 2025, officers from LTA conducted an enforcement operation along Geylang Lorongs, targeting illegally modified Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) and Power Assisted Bicycles (PABs). Three men, aged between 23 and 37, were caught contravening under the Active Mobility rules and regulations. One PAB was also impounded during the operation.
The Commanding Officer of Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Firdaus Bin Abdul Raub expressed his appreciation to all the agencies involved for their strong support and commended the officers for their professionalism and excellent teamwork during the operation. He said “The Police will continue to work closely with other enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal activities. The Police take a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal activities and will take firm action against those who blatantly disregard the law. Members of the public are advised to report those engaging in unlawful activities to the Police.”
