In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, motorists are liable to a fine of up to $2,000, a jail term up to six months, or both. The offenders may face disqualification from driving all classes of licence.

Speeding remains one of the main causes of accidents. Driving or riding beyond the imposed speed limits increases the likelihood of serious injuries in the event of an accident. Motorists should adhere to the road and vehicular speed limits for their safety and that of other road users. From 1 January 2026, composition sums and demerit points for speeding offences will be increased to further deter such dangerous behaviour (refer to Annex A). The Traffic Police will continue to take firm enforcement action against motorists who speed and put lives of road users at risk. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and all road users are urged to play their part in keeping the roads safe.

Annex A

Current and Enhanced Demerit Points and Compositions

* Receiving 24 demerit points will result in suspension of the licence.
