Man Charged For Offence Under Computer Misuse Act

On 11 July 2025, 52-year-old Ananthan S/O Naedasan (“Ananthan”) was charged in court with one count of disclosing his Singpass credentials for unlawful gain, under Section 8(1)(a) of the Computer Misuse Act 1993 (“CMA”).

In October 2022, the Police received information that as a result of a business email compromise scam, a foreign victim had transferred approximately US$ 1 million to a bank account of Global Whitehouse Pte Ltd (“Global Whitehouse”) in August 2022. Ananthan was the director of Global Whitehouse during the material period.

In the same month, the Police received additional information that as a result of a business email compromise scam, another foreign victim had transferred GBP$ 815,850 to a bank account of Matrix Lane Pte Ltd (“Matrix Lane”) in October 2022. Ananthan was the director of Matrix Lane during the material period as well.

Investigations revealed that Ananthan had allegedly disclosed his login credentials for an unknown individual to use his Singpass account in return for a sum of money. His Singpass credentials were used to incorporate Global Whitehouse and Matrix Lane, as well as to open the abovementioned corporate bank accounts which were used to receive benefits of the above criminal conduct.

The offence under Section 8(1)(a) of the CMA carries a fine not exceeding $10,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or to both.

Scams, such as those perpetrated online and/or from overseas, are a major crime concern. Singapore takes a serious view on scams and related money laundering activities, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.  To avoid being an accomplice in these crimes, members of the public should always reject seemingly attractive money-making opportunities promising fast and easy pay-outs for the use of their Singpass accounts, bank accounts, or allow their personal bank accounts to be used to receive and transfer money for others. The Police would like to remind members of the public that individuals will be held accountable if they are found to be linked to such crimes.
