The Police would like to alert members of the public to a scam variant where scammers impersonate staff from the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC).
In these cases, scammers impersonate staff from NCPC in unsolicited phone calls to members of the public in order to phish for personal information from victims. In some cases, the scammer informed the victims that their identities had been stolen and used to apply for credit cards or to register phone numbers that were allegedly involved in illegal activities.
In one instance, the call was transferred to another “officer” from NCPC, who communicated with the victim via WhatsApp. The scammer would send fake official documents to the victim via WhatsApp to enhance his credibility and instructed the victim to transfer monies into a “safety account” for safekeeping as part of police investigations. The victim realized it was a scam only after he told his family member about the alleged investigations and the family verified directly with the Police.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Devrajan Bala, Director of the Scam Public Education Office in Singapore Police Force who is also the Executive Director of the National Crime Prevention Council said, “We have received information from the NCPC’s ScamShield Helpline that there are scammers attempting to impersonate staff from NCPC. I would like to assure the public that NCPC staff will never ask you to transfer money or disclose your bank login details. As a non-profit organization, NCPC also does not possess any investigative powers.”
Members of the public are encouraged to stay vigilant against such impersonation scams and adopt the following precautionary measures:
ADD – Add the ScamShield app and enable relevant security features such as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and notification alerts.
CHECK – Carefully read all communications and verify the authenticity of any requests received. Be wary of unsolicited calls and use the ScamShield app or website at www.scamshield.gov.sg to check suspicious numbers or messages.
