Traffic offences of concern include re-light running, speeding-related offences and drink-driving.

2. There was a decrease in red-light running and speeding-related violations and accidents, but an increase in drink-driving accidents
In 2023, the number of drink-driving accidents increased from 175 cases in 2022 to 180 cases in 2023. The number of fatal drink-driving accidents also increased from 10 cases in 2022 to 11 cases in 2023.

A disproportionate number of road traffic accidents in 2023 involved elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists.

3. Elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists remain vulnerable to road traffic accidents
There continues to be a disproportionate number of road traffic accidents involving elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists. Elderly pedestrians were involved in 68.4% of all fatal traffic accidents involving pedestrians, and they also accounted for 69.2% of pedestrian fatalities. While motorcycles make up 14.4% of the total vehicle population, motorcyclists or pillion riders were involved in 53.5% of all traffic accidents and accounted for 50% of traffic fatalities.

We can all play a part in ensuring road safety
Noting the increase in road fatalities, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SAC) Daniel Tan, Commander TP, shared key enforcement methods that will be implemented in 2024, and also urged road users to play their part in ensuring road safety.

“We’ll be rolling out the speed enforcement function in our Red Light Cameras starting from the next quarter… [and] come down hard on road users who blatantly disregard the law,” said SAC Tan. “All of us as road users have a part to play in keeping our roads safe, and I urge everybody to give a little bit of patience when on the roads.”
