The Police Tactical Unit (PTU) is one of the three main units of the Special Operations Command (SOC), in addition to the Special Tactics and Rescue Unit and the Police K-9 Unit. The PTU is highly trained and responsible for maintaining public order, from managing civil disturbances to quelling riots. The unit also performs security-related duties including searches for armed criminals and illegal immigrants; and also responds to armed attacks and terrorist-related incidents in public security situations.

Equipped with advanced equipment, including both lethal and less-lethal weapons, the PTU is well-prepared to handle public order and public security situations.

Leveraging Technology for Operational Effectiveness

The SOC started developing its Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) capabilities in 2018. Leveraging technology for better sense-making during incidents, the PTU can deploy UAVs and fly them through tight openings such as windows and roof access points. Through a live video feed, drone operators can get the situational picture, allowing them to make more informed decisions on the ground.

During a recent demonstration at the Home Team Tactical Centre, the PTU was activated in response to a public security situation involving a gunman. The First-Person-View (FPV) drone has the ability to capture images in real-time via a pair of tactical goggles. It was deployed into a building as a front scout before PTU officers entered.

Flying ahead of the officers, the FPV drone located the gunman hiding in a corner. This information was then relayed to the officers who moved in swiftly and took down the gunman.

“In response to the rapidly evolving technological landscape and emerging threats, the SOC has been proactive in leveraging technology such as UAVs to augment our operations and mitigate risks to our officers,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Eugene Ooi, Company Commander of the PTU.

UAVs have become an integral part of the SOC’s operational strategy, ensuring that it can continue to take on emerging threats and keep Singapore safe and secure!
