Woman To Be Charged For Series Of Rental Scams

The Police will be charging a 31-year-old woman for a series of rental scams involving eight victims with losses amounting to at least $27,000.

On 2 June 2022, the Police received a report from a victim who shared that she was scammed of $5,400 by a woman after being duped into renting a unit in Yishun. The victim had wanted to rent a place and had responded to online advertisements posted by the woman. After the victim paid the deposit via bank transfer, the woman purportedly became uncontactable.

Through extensive ground enquiries and follow up investigations, officers from Woodlands Police Division arrested the woman on 2 June 2022 in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. Preliminary investigations revealed that she had allegedly deceived seven other victims with total reported losses amounting to at least $27,000.

The woman will be charged in court on 3 June 2022 with an offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
