Man Arrested For Evading A Roadblock

The Police have arrested a 19-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of evasion of roadblock.

On 22 September 2022 at about 3.30am, officers from Woodlands Police Division conducted a roadblock along Sembawang Road, and directed for a car to stop for vehicular checks. The car allegedly failed to stop, reversed, and sped off.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from CCTV and Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the driver and arrested him within 18 hours of the incident. Preliminary investigations revealed that he was in possession of a scheduled weapon and driven a motor vehicle without a valid driving license. The man’s urine also purportedly tested positive for controlled drugs and he will be referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.

The man will be charged in court on 24 September 2022 with evasion of a roadblock under Section 26(2) of the Police Force Act 2004 and possession of a scheduled weapon under Section 7(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons 1958.

Any person convicted with evasion of a roadblock shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000, imprisonment up to seven years, or both. Any person convicted with possession of a scheduled weapon shall be liable to imprisonment up to five years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than six strokes.

The Police conduct roadblocks to deter and detect crimes. Members of the public are advised to cooperate with police officers when approached during roadblocks. The Police take a serious view of persons who evade roadblocks and perpetrators will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
