I’m Inspector (Insp) Kelvyn Owen and a trainer with the Police K-9 Unit. This is my 20th year in the unit, where I started off as an officer in the frontline before taking on my current role as a trainer.
As a trainer, I help train the K-9 dogs and equip them with the skills and capabilities to conduct patrols; to assist in search and rescue operations; and to assist in the detection of drugs, explosives and firearms during police operations.
The bond between the K-9 dog and its handler is crucial. During my training sessions, I would often share tips with new handlers on how to work effectively with their dogs by understanding their behaviours and signals.
As a trainer, one of the biggest challenges is to learn how to adapt to the different learning styles of the various dogs. I recall it was quite challenging when training Jack (as pictured)! He wasn’t really attentive in the beginning and I had to try out various training methodologies to keep him engaged for him to acquire the necessary skills. I am happy to share that Jack is now a capable and well-trained Police Patrol Dog with the K-9!
I am grateful for the opportunity to train and work with like-minded canine-loving officers in our closely knitted K-9 Unit to contribute to the safety and security of Singapore!
