The Police would like to alert the public to scams involving sale of bak kwa in the period leading up to Chinese New Year.
In these cases, scammers would post advertisements on Facebook, claiming to sell “Hock Moon Hiong” bak kwa in Singapore. The victims are required to place orders via Facebook and make full payment via PayNow or bank transfer. The victims only discovered that they have been scammed when they do not receive the bak kwa and realised that the seller had become uncontactable.
Members of the public are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
- If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is. Purchase only from authorised sellers or reputable sources.
- Only meat products from approved sources can be imported or brought into Singapore.
- Verify seller’s profile on online marketplaces through customer reviews and ratings.
- If responding to online classified advertisements, always insist on cash on delivery.
