Man Arrested For Attempted Extortion

Police have arrested a 24-year-old man believed to be involved in a case of attempted extortion.

On 19 April 2022 at about 5.25pm, the Police received a report that a man had allegedly attempted to extort a victim by threatening to disseminate a compromising video clip of the victim on social media, and demanded $50,000 from the victim.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him. A mobile phone was seized as a case exhibit.

Investigations are ongoing. The suspect will be charged in court on 23 April 2022 with the offence of Attempted Extortion under Section 385 of the Penal Code 1871, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of five years with caning.
