Driver To Be Charged For Driving Without Due Care And Attention Causing Death And Grievous Hurt

A 38-year-old woman will be charged in court on 8 April 2026 for her involvement in a road traffic accident which resulted in the death of a six-year-old girl and grievous hurt to a 31-year-old woman.

On 6 February 2026 at about 11.50am, the Police were alerted to an accident involving a car and two pedestrians along Spring Street. The 38-year-old woman who was driving the car was arrested at the scene. One of the pedestrians, a six-year-old girl, was conveyed unconscious to the hospital where she subsequently passed away. The other pedestrian, a 31-year-old woman, was conveyed conscious to the hospital and has since been discharged.

The 38-year-old woman will be charged in court on 8 April 2026 with the following offences:

  1. Driving without due care and attention causing death under Section 65(1)(a) read with Section 65(2) punishable under Section 65(6)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961; and

  2. Driving without due care and attention causing grievous hurt under Section 65(1)(a) read with Section 65(3) punishable under Section 65(7)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.

The offence of driving without due care and attention causing death carries a fine of up to $10,000, an imprisonment term of up to three years, or to both; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

The offence of driving without due care and attention causing grievous hurt carries a fine of up to $5,000, an imprisonment term of up to two years, or to both; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

The Traffic Police (TP) takes a serious view of motorists who drive carelessly and endanger the lives or safety of other road users. All motorists are urged to abide by traffic rules to keep our roads safe for everyone. TP will continue to take firm action against errant motorists.
