No job is too big; no pup is too small!
Our Police K-9 dogs have been indispensable partners on the frontline since 1955. From sniffing out explosives and tracking down suspects in unfamiliar terrain, our four-legged friends are often the first to step into situations that may be dangerous or inaccessible to officers. More than just man’s best friend, our K-9 dogs play a major role in detecting threats, tracking suspects and deterring crime.
Now, our furry friends are getting a technological upgrade!
The Singapore Police Force’s (SPF) Special Operations Command (SOC) is now trialling a new canine-mounted camera system to boost the operational capabilities of the Police K-9 Unit.
When K-9 dogs are deployed during public security incidents, the canine-mounted camera system gives PTU officers greater situational awareness and improved operational effectiveness.
A Live Paws-pective
A camera unit is attached to the harness of the K-9 dogs, allowing live video and audio transmission from the system directly to a Police Tactical Unit (PTU) officer’s handheld monitor. The PTU team can then effectively assess the room layout and identify potential threats in real time.
When a K-9 dog spots a hostile subject, the PTU team can confirm whether the subject is armed, significantly improving officers’ tactical decision-making during high-stakes situations.
By tracking the behavioural cues of the K-9 dogs, PTU officers can also more accurately determine the whereabouts of hostages during search operations.
Red-Hot Pursuit
When subjects are hidden in confined spaces, behind structures or physical barriers, officers face difficulty locating them. With the integration of thermal imaging capability in the camera system, PTU officers can now detect human heat signatures that are invisible to the naked eye.
Coupled with the sharp noses of our K-9 friends, locating subjects in challenging terrains becomes far more effective.
Oh Snap!
Built-in infrared light-emitting diodes were also integrated into the system, allowing K-9 dogs to capture clear footage in low or no light settings without emitting any visible light.
This keeps the K-9 dog’s position concealed so subjects remain unaware of its presence. Officers can then quietly map the terrain and maintain operational awareness, even in complete darkness.
The Paws that Uphold the Laws
The canine-mounted camera system also includes in-built microphones for officers to relay specific instructions and warnings to subjects through the dog, enabling two-way communication. A snapshot function allows still images to be captured from the live feed when needed.
The camera unit is mounted on a spring-loaded arm designed to absorb the movement impact of the K-9 dogs. As the dog runs and navigates tight spaces, the mount adjusts with its movement. This helps the K-9 dogs stay light on their paws and move freely during operations.
The trial demonstrates how the SPF continues to harness technology to enhance the SOC’s operational capabilities, especially in complex tactical search operations.
“This (camera system) provides our officers with greater situational awareness to respond more effectively during public security incidents,” said Superintendent of Police (Supt) Jerlyn Tan, Deputy Commanding Officer of the K-9 Unit.
This added capability transforms how our PTU officers and K-9 dogs work together to keep Singapore safe!
