Man To Be Charged For Cheating

The Police have arrested a 51-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of cheating.

On 29 June 2026 at about 7.30pm, the Police received a report stating that the man, who was engaged as an interior designer, had devised a scheme offering discounts on renovation services if renovation payments are transferred to him directly. The man then convinced the victim to transfer payment directly to him instead of the company's account. Despite collecting the sum from the victim, the man failed to fulfil the renovation services. The victim later contacted the renovation company and was advised to lodge a Police report.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in other cheating cases involving a similar modus operandi, where the losses are exceeding $100,000, and that the man had used the monies for gambling purposes.

The man will be charged in court on 15 August 2026 with the offence of cheating under Section 420(1) of the Penal Code 1871. The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine or to caning or to both.

The Police take a serious view of such offences and will not hesitate to take action against those who commit cheating. Members of the public are advised to exercise due diligence when engaging renovation companies or contractors. Always verify the credentials of the company and its representative and avoid making large payments before work commences.
