Each year, residents eagerly anticipate the sparkling decorations and lights that adorn the streets of Little India during the Deepavali festivities.
While many immerse themselves in the sights and sample the delicious food on offer, others don their gear and prepare themselves for deployment. These are our Police officers who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the community.
Among these officers is Sergeant (Sgt) Pravin S/O Kunasegaran, who is enthusiastic to take part in his first Deepavali deployment since joining Rochor Neighbourhood Police Centre in November 2024. As a Ground Response Force officer, Sgt Pravin works with his fellow officers to conduct patrols and manage crowds in Little India during the festive period.

On the Lookout
Patrolling Little India during Deepavali requires meticulous planning as the festive period poses unique operational challenges. “The large crowds and heavy vehicular traffic can be demanding,” says Sgt Pravin. “That’s why we must stay vigilant to keep everyone safe.”
As part of their preparations, Sgt Pravin and his colleagues go through detailed briefings and coordinate with other public agencies to conduct effective patrols. Once they hit the streets, Sgt Pravin and his partner, Sgt Nor Amalina Binti Mohamed Jaffar, look out for public safety issues and suspicious activities.

The patrols involve regular interactions with shop owners and residents, and continue late into the night. For Sgt Pravin, sufficient rest and strong team synergy are key to maintaining his alertness.
Connecting with the Community
Reflecting on what motivates him the most to step up for duty during Deepavali, Sgt Pravin says, “Deepavali is a time for family and celebrations, but I feel a strong sense of duty to keep the community safe.”
Serving the community has been central to Sgt Pravin’s journey in the Singapore Police Force (SPF). “I joined the SPF because I wanted to serve the public and contribute to keeping Singapore safe,” he says. “It feels meaningful to be able to protect the community during festive occasions like Deepavali.”

His jovial and people-first attitude is evident as he walks along rows of stalls at the Deepavali Bazaar, greeting members of the public with a smile and always ready to assist them if needed.
Although being deployed means less time celebrating Deepavali with his loved ones, Sgt Pravin strives to balance his duty with family time.

“It’s not easy,” admits Sgt Pravin. “But I understand the importance of the job and make time to celebrate with my family after duty. They understand my responsibilities and always give me their full support and encouragement.”
A Safer Deepavali for All
As their patrol draws to a close, Sgt Pravin and Sgt Amalina feel immensely satisfied with their role in ensuring the public can enjoy the festivities with peace of mind.

When asked what he’d like the public to know about the efforts of frontline officers during Deepavali, Sgt Pravin replies: “We work behind the scenes to ensure that everyone can celebrate safely, and we appreciate the public’s cooperation. Thank you to my fellow officers for your hard work!”
He also extends his wishes to all celebrating Deepavali: “Stay safe, take care of one another and have a joyful Deepavali!”
