Operationalised on 30 December 2012, Woodlands West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) was originally part of Jurong Police Division but came under Woodlands Police Division when it was launched in 2018.

Explore this unique NPC’s “spooktacular” event and meet Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) (Community) [VSC(C)] officer Chiang Ming Yu, a standout volunteer who’s passionate about community service!

Unique Challenges; Varied Landscapes
With a jurisdiction that encompasses farms in Lim Chu Kang, Sungei Buloh’s nature areas and iconic attractions like Mandai Wildlife Reserve, Woodlands West NPC allows its officers to not only patrol residential areas, but also relish brilliant views and unique terrain while on duty.

When it comes to crime prevention advisories, commuters receive special attention from Woodlands West NPC officers who actively engage them at Woodlands Checkpoint. Officers also collaborate closely with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority to ensure safety and security at this critical transport node.

Patrolling the Paranormal
In addition to conducting engagement sessions such as the Guardians of Our Community roadshow held at Causeway Point on 28 October 2023, Woodlands West NPC also reaches out to residents through innovative new initiatives!

Since the residents of Woodgrove Estate first celebrated Halloween in their neighbourhood in 2007, the event has grown into Singapore’s largest Halloween celebration. Fuelled by community creativity and spirit, thousands now partake in the time-honoured tradition of trick-or-treating. The officers of Woodlands West NPC ensure the safety of participants by actively engaging with them and maintaining a visible police presence to deter crime.

A Lawyer with a Passion for Volunteering
At Woodlands West NPC, volunteers play a pivotal part in helping to maintain safety and fostering community spirit. VSC(C) officer Ming Yu explains his motivations for serving as a volunteer!

How long have you served in the VSC(C), and what’s your day job?
I was part of the VSC(C)’s pioneering cohort in early 2018, so I’ve been a volunteer for five years. I’m the Head of Legal & Compliance at a financial institution that provides financial services.

What motivated you to volunteer with the VSCC?
I was already a Singapore Armed Forces volunteer and, as I approached the mandatory retirement age of 55, was wondering if I should continue serving. I was introduced to the VSC(C) scheme in 2018 and I found it fascinating, so I applied to join at the age of 49.

The training was nine-weeks-long and covered policing procedures, basic legal knowledge, Police Contact Tactics and first aid. VSC(C) officers can also serve up to 65 years.

Let’s talk: VSC(C) officer Ming Yu hosted online engagement sessions on behalf of Woodlands West NPC. PHOTO: SPF

What are your most interesting experiences at Woodlands West NPC?
I’ve co-hosted Youth Crime Prevention sessions online, in collaboration with Community Policing Unit (CPU) colleagues and other officers. Additionally, in 2020, I was the first VSC(C) officer to assist an arrest for unruly behaviour during the COVID-19 lockdown, as part of our patrols.

How do you juggle your volunteering, work and family commitments?

Balancing these requires strong family support and effective time management. I volunteer almost every week, with supportive CPU colleagues tapping on us for various initiatives.

What would you say to people who want to volunteer as VSC(C) officers?
Volunteering in the VSC(C) allows you to see a different side of Singapore and gain an appreciation of the work that Police officers do to safeguard the nation every day. It’s also a great way to give back to society!
